Short Description:

439 is an 18% chromium, titanium stabilized ferritic stainless steel with corrosion resistance similar to that of 304/304L stainless steel. This grade may be used in the annealed, cold formed or as-welded condition in applications where other stainless steels such as 304/304L and 430 are used. 439 has good weldability due to titanium stabilization and has excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking. 439 outperforms 409 in both oxidation and corrosion resistance and typical applications include tubular manifolds and exhaust system components.

409 is a heat resisting ferritic stainless steel providing good oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. This titanium stabilized grade was developed for automotive exhaust systems but its good formability, weldability, and corrosion resistance has led to its use in other applications. The corrosion resistance of 409 is better than coated carbon steel, similar to that of 410 stainless steel, and less than that of 304/304L stainless steel. Type 409 is not suggested for cosmetic or surface critical applications as light surface rusting can form during exposure to atmospheric conditions.
